Start Including These Tooth Healthy Foods in your Diet

Posted on 9/23/2015 by Dr. Call
A woman on a diet eating a salad. There are a lot of foods and beverages that are unhealthy for your smile. Things like too much candy or soda can eventually aggravate your teeth. Even too much fruit juice is not always good when it comes to the upkeep of a healthy mouth. Along with an unhealthy tooth comes the relevant appearance that can be seen through stains on the teeth by drinks such as coffee or wine.

Eating and drinking the right types of foods and drinks is wonderful for your complete health. Vitamin and calcium rich foods can keep your tooth enamel strong. Our dental practice helps our patients to understand that tooth healthy foods and drinks goes beyond ingesting sugars.

Healthy Food, Healthy Teeth

Dairy products are great to incorporate in your diet because they have hydroxyapatite. This mineral strengthens bones and tooth enamel. Calcium rich foods like cheese, yogurt, and milk for example, carry the protein recaldent or casein. This sends calcium to teeth to mineralize them in order to fight off plaque.

Next on the menu to start including in your diet for healthy teeth care are leafy vegetables. Not only are vegetables good for your cholesterol, but they also act like a washer to your teeth. Vegetables aid the saliva that contains enzymes through all of the chewing, which help to kill bacteria. Eating veggies daily doesn't seem like such a bad thing after all.

Nuts, carrots, and apples have been known to have vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to the health of your teeth. These foods have other health benefits that a patient will enjoy to boost their health. Vision health from carrots, reduction of diabetes from apples, and nuts for your heart are some amazing advantages.

Whole grains like bran or brown rice provide vitamin B that can actually keep gums healthy. Eating wheat breads or oatmeal can do more than prevent irritated gums but can save your life. Studies show that gum health is linked to factors like heart disease, which most people don't consider when eating their food.

Fish lovers will definitely want to add salmon to their tooth health diet. Wild salmon contains vitamin D which is instrumental in bone and tooth health. Absorbing the calcium from vitamin D into your system provides protection for your teeth. With all of these foods to include into a healthy tooth diet one beverage that is always great for your well-being is water. Our saliva is made up of about 90% of water. The liquid is very tooth friendly sustaining smiles and life.

The Tooth Inclusion

There are many other foods that patients should try to fit into their meal plan. Our staff explains the appeal in maintaining a well-rounded diet. Eating meals that have an abundance of vitamins will provide support that is essential for your teeth. Certain lean meats have a natural element in them like omega-3 fatty acids that reduce the risk of catching periodontal disease. Whenever you drink or eat anything, the teeth are the first line of defense.

The breakdown of food puts the defense at risk of being attacked by heavy acids. Sugars play a role in the diet that leads to tooth decay when over indulging is involved. When you come into our dental health clinic, we take the time to go over the basics of good nutrition. We will offer suggestions and alternatives to some of the foods that you eat that are very acidic. Don't wait until it is too late to come and see us. Our mission may start with your teeth, but it ends with your health, especially your diet.

Services Offered

Preventive Dentistry

We are passionate about preventing problems before they start. We do so by educating our patients about what positive dental habits they can be forming and having our patients visit us twice a year for exams and cleanings.

Restorative Dentistry

We understand that often, due to circumstances outside of your control, your mouth may need restorative actions taken. That’s why we offer a bevy of restorative procedures to bring your smile back to it’s original luster.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Frequently we hear that the procedures that make the biggest difference in our patient’s smiles are cosmetic in nature. Whitening, veneers and Invisalign® are just a few of the cosmetic procedure we offer!

IV Sedation

For those patients that need more than just oral sedation we offer what is often called “sleep sedation”. If anxiety is an issue or if the procedure calls for it we can easily place you under full anesthesia to ensure that you rest peacefully through the whole thing.

Dental Implants

If you have lost a tooth or are looking at tooth removal as an option, dental implants are the most highly recommended form of replacement for teeth. Dental implants involve inserting a titanium post into your jaw which will fuse with your bone structure. The post will be topped with a crown made specifically to fit your bite. The result is a form of tooth replacement that looks and acts exactly as your real tooth would. It even prevents bone loss, which is a common side effect of tooth loss.

Dental Technology

We are happy to use a great variety of cutting edge technology in our practice. Digital X-rays are one of our staples in dental tech. Standard X-rays can take time to view and process but with the advent of digital X-rays we can view the inner workings of your mouth almost instantly. We are also able to take higher quality X-rays that allow us to detect things like tooth decay within the tooth, cysts, tumors, and impacted teeth. Further, the radiation you receive from a digital X-ray device is about 1/5th that of a standard X-ray.

We also offer intraoral cameras and ultrasonic scalers. The intraoral cameras aid us in detecting any issues within your mouth that may need further dental attention. Ultrasonic scalers are by far the most effective method for removing built up plaque and tartar that has accumulated on teeth.
