Can You Leave Non-Erupted Teeth In Your Gums?

If you have a tooth that never descended into your mouth, can you leave that tooth sitting up in your gums or do you need something to be done with it? You should have something done with the tooth if it is shifting even slightly.

A tooth that does not move at all, may be fine to leave there if your dentist is keeping a close eye on it. However, if that tooth is shifting and moving around, you need to have it extracted or pulled into place to make sure that your mouth is able to remain healthy.

Problems with Impacted Teeth

A tooth that is not descending into place is considered stuck, or impacted. These teeth sometimes will sit still for quite some time. However, eventually, nearly all of them move. They want to make their way into your mouth. That is their job, after all. If your dentist says that the tooth is in good condition and stable, it can be alright to leave that tooth in place, for now. However, as soon as that tooth tries to come in, it could hurt the other parts of your mouth.

A non-erupted tooth is one that can sit up in your gums and cause pain and even kickstart an infection. The sharp edges of the tooth can rip open the gums, which means bacteria can get into that part of your mouth. Most people don't get that high into their mouth when they brush, so this means that it could quickly become infected. This could spread to other parts of your body and make you incredibly sick, too.

If you have a tooth that is being defiant on coming down into place, talk with your dentist. They can track the progress of the tooth through x-rays and help you decide how to treat it when necessary.

Services Offered

Preventive Dentistry

We are passionate about preventing problems before they start. We do so by educating our patients about what positive dental habits they can be forming and having our patients visit us twice a year for exams and cleanings.

Restorative Dentistry

We understand that often, due to circumstances outside of your control, your mouth may need restorative actions taken. That’s why we offer a bevy of restorative procedures to bring your smile back to it’s original luster.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Frequently we hear that the procedures that make the biggest difference in our patient’s smiles are cosmetic in nature. Whitening, veneers and Invisalign® are just a few of the cosmetic procedure we offer!

IV Sedation

For those patients that need more than just oral sedation we offer what is often called “sleep sedation”. If anxiety is an issue or if the procedure calls for it we can easily place you under full anesthesia to ensure that you rest peacefully through the whole thing.

Dental Implants

If you have lost a tooth or are looking at tooth removal as an option, dental implants are the most highly recommended form of replacement for teeth. Dental implants involve inserting a titanium post into your jaw which will fuse with your bone structure. The post will be topped with a crown made specifically to fit your bite. The result is a form of tooth replacement that looks and acts exactly as your real tooth would. It even prevents bone loss, which is a common side effect of tooth loss.

Dental Technology

We are happy to use a great variety of cutting edge technology in our practice. Digital X-rays are one of our staples in dental tech. Standard X-rays can take time to view and process but with the advent of digital X-rays we can view the inner workings of your mouth almost instantly. We are also able to take higher quality X-rays that allow us to detect things like tooth decay within the tooth, cysts, tumors, and impacted teeth. Further, the radiation you receive from a digital X-ray device is about 1/5th that of a standard X-ray.

We also offer intraoral cameras and ultrasonic scalers. The intraoral cameras aid us in detecting any issues within your mouth that may need further dental attention. Ultrasonic scalers are by far the most effective method for removing built up plaque and tartar that has accumulated on teeth.
