Should I Eat Fruits and Vegetables for My Dental Health?
Posted on 1/15/2024 by Weo Admin
There is no question it is important for your health to eat a healthy portion of fruits and vegetables each day. Fruits and vegetables are essential to healthy cell growth and development. However, the question remains: How many servings of veggies and fruits should you eat each day, and what kind of fruits and vegetables are best for your dental health?
Green, Leafy Veggies
Lettuce, spinach, and kale, as well as other leafy green veggies, are important for your dental health. These vegetables contain calcium, folic acid, vitamin D, vitamin A, and vitamin C, all of which are crucial to keep your teeth and bones strong, cut down on inflammation, and strengthen blood flow. Whether you choose to eat a leafy green salad or drink a kale smoothie, be sure you indulge in at least one serving of leafy greens each day.
Fibrous Fruits
Dense fruits, such as apples and pears, are great for your dental health. First, eating dense fruit requires a lot of chewing, which means that you produce more saliva. Saliva helps to wash away the bacteria that cause both tooth decay and gum disease. Also, chewing fibrous fruits stimulates your gums and encourages healthy blood flow.
Cranberries and Raisins
Fresh cranberries and dried raisins are both good for your dental health for the same reason. They contain polyphenols, which discourage the growth of plaque on your teeth. Plaque on teeth can lead to gum disease and cavities in your mouth, so the less plaque you have in your mouth, the better. Raisins contain phytochemicals, which also fight the bacteria in your mouth. Be sure that if you eat raisins, they do not contain added sugars because that defeats the purpose of consuming raisins.
