The Difference Between the DDS And the DMD in Dentistry
Posted on 5/1/2024 by Century Dental
If you have been looking for a new dentist, you may have been glancing on the internet to look at dental reviews or information on websites. You might have noticed letters behind the name of the dentist, such as DDS or DMD. What do those letters mean, and what is the difference between the DDS and the DMD for dentists?
Dental Education
Dentists have a specific track to complete their education and training in the dental field. First, all dentists have to get a bachelors degree in college before applying to dental school. Many dentists graduate with a degree in the science field, such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, or microbiology.
Once a student has been accepted into dental school, they will be studying topics in dentistry for four years, which is the same amount of time students who want to become doctors take in medical school. Dental school has classes in a classroom, as well as a dental laboratory and clinical rotations to prepare dentists for a career.
It does not matter whether our dentist has DMD or DDS behind their name. DMD is the acronym for Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine. DDS is the acronym for Doctor of Dental Surgery. Either acronym allows dentists to practice dental medicine.
After Dental School
Dentists are not ready to practice after dental school. Once they graduate, they must pass a national examination called the National Board Dental Examination. If they pass that, they must then take a state or regional certification exam. Only then will they be prepared to practice dentistry.
Some dentists go on after dental school to undertake a dental specialty. For example, if you know a dental practitioner who is an orthodontist, that is a dental specialty focusing on bite issues and tooth spacing. Periodontists specialize in gum disease and treatments.
No matter what letters are behind the names, we know you will love our dentists. Why not make an appointment to see one of them today?
